The history of rose plants is as colourful as their flowers. Roses are the most accepted symbols of love, beauty, war and politics. The fossil evidences reveal that the rose is about 35 million years old plant. It is said that the first rose cultivation started in China approximately 5,000 years ago. In the ancient Roman times, roses were used for medicinal purposes, as confetti at celebrations, and as a source of perfume.

The word ‘rosa’ is derived from 'rodon', the Greek word referring to "Red" colour. Two main classifications of roses are Wild Species Roses and Rosa rugosa. The Wild Species Roses have comparatively simple, 5-petaled flowers followed by very colorful hips. The second variety, Rosa rugosa, is the most popular rose species for sale today. The characteristics such as superior hardiness, disease resistance and extremely easy maintenance make this species most favored.

Today, people present a bouquet of roses as a gift regardless of what the occasion. The gift of roses has not only become synonymous with romantic holidays such as Valentines Day, but also as a symbol of love or care on birthdays, anniversaries, father’s day, mother’s day, and many other special occasions. To be precise, sending roses help you express your love for a birthday or for someone in the hospital, to show your friendship, to congratulate someone, or to express your love to someone.

An important point to remember while sending roses is which color the roses you send are. This is because each color of the roses brings a different message, therefore it is important to pick the right color. A bouquet of pink roses refers to ‘please, believe me’. A tea rose means ‘I’ll always remember’. White roses are a symbol of innocence and purity, while a yellow rose stands for jealousy.

Giving a single or dozen or even more roses have special meanings. A single rose indicates ‘love at first sight’ or that ‘you still love somebody’. A dozen roses will help you say ‘be mine’; while 15 roses signify ‘you are truly sorry’. Two dozen roses mean ‘forever yours’.
